In the backdrop of COVID-19, a lot of new job openings or internships expect you to join work remotely. So what is remote working and how do you make the most of this opportunity? This AVCOE blog will walk you through the concept of ‘remote working’ and what it entails.
In the last six months, a growing number of startups and companies have given up on their offices and real estate, only to encourage their staff to work from the comfort of their homes. This transition has led to a change in how people traditionally viewed the workspace.
The transition has made them adapt to the new idea of a remote working. Now even though companies may revert back to their brick and mortar offices soon, a lot of businesses have incorporated it as a regular work pattern. So what are the things to remember while working remotely?
Develop a work routine
A lot of people believe that working at home means that it will be easier to plan your day and you can breeze through both home and office tasks. However, not following a work routine can be a recipe for disaster. Plan your work day as if you would if you had to work from an actual office, to avoid forgetting important tasks and affecting productivity.
Use your calendar
Not just work meetings but also for personal tasks, it is important that you mark events and meetings on your calendar. This will not only help you plan in advance for tasks that need preparation, but it will also help you avoid over-committing in your professional or personal life.
Separate your personal and work space
Dedicate a space in your house with the least distractions and best connectivity to work from, during your office hours. After your office hours either move away from this space or dismantle the setup to enjoy the rest of your day. Also communicate clearly with your office about the hours you will be available for work related tasks and those hours you will be unavailable, except for exigencies. This will ensure that you get some time to do things that you enjoy, spend time with family, and are able to unwind after a work day.
Take sick leaves
If you are not well then communicate the same to the HR or your reporting manager and take the day off. A mistake we often tend to make when working from home is overestimating our ability to deliver when we are sick. Also, without enough rest and required medical attention, you could end up worsening the situation. It is best to take the day off and not power through an illness unnecessarily.
Become friends with tech
If you are tech savvy, you already know how to use productivity and remote working tools like Teams, Slack, Google Docs and Zoom. If you are not well versed with technology, consider this as an opportunity that has presented itself in the form of a challenge. These tools not only make working remotely easy but also help you collaborate with your team and communicate well. Even if you are working from home temporarily, it's important to learn how these tools work.
