The world has seen a massive shift in terms of how we work. We are increasingly moving from offline to online and a lot of businesses have given up real estate .i.e their brick and mortar offices. With the increasing dependency on technology, the stakes are now really high when it comes to digital infrastructure. We are relying on standard protection measures and cybersecurity software right now but we will soon see a shift in how the world views cybersecurity.  


In this AVCOE blog, we talk about the companies that make some of the most popular antivirus software in the world. You will perhaps be familiar with the names of the products or software, but how much did you know about the company that made this software? Let’s start with a few popular names:


Norton


Norton Antivirus, a household name in India, is an antivirus software developed by NortonLifeLock since the year 1991. NortonLifeLock was formerly known as Symantec and is based out of Arizona, USA. One of the most experienced companies in this industry, it was founded way back in the year 1982 and it is now a public listed company. In 2020, they had an estimated 3659 employees on their payroll.    


Kaspersky


Kaspersky Anti-Virus is another popular name in this segment. It is created and sold by Kaspersky Lab. Kaspersky Lab is a Russian cybersecurity company based out of Moscow and is extremely popular in Europe.  


Kaspersky Lab has its headquarters in Moscow, Russia and it was founded by Eugene Kaspersky, Natalya Kaspersky, and Alexey De-Monderik in the year 1997. Kaspersky Lab is operated by a holding company in the United Kingdom and it ranks fourth in the global ranking of antivirus vendors by revenue.


McAfee


McAfee VirusScan is a product of the McAfee Corp, an American global computer security software company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. McAfee primarily develops digital-security tools for personal computers and server devices, and more recently, for mobile devices.


The company was purchased by Intel in February 2011 and became part of the Intel Security division. On September 7, 2016, Intel announced a strategic deal with TPG Capital to convert Intel Security into a joint venture between both companies called McAfee. That deal closed on April 3, 2017. Thoma Bravo took a minority stake in the new company, and Intel maintains a 49% stake.



Other important players in this segment include BitDefender, TrendMicro, ESET, Avast and AVG Technologies.
